Welcome to the Virtual Shincliffe website!
This website provides a virtual reality tour of Shincliffe, a parish to the south of Durham City, England.
In order to view the VR movies, you will need to have the Quicktime plugin installed in your browser. Your monitor should be set to AT LEAST 800x600 pixels and thousands of colours (16 bit)
Go to VR
Graphical Interface: includes most VR movies of High Shincliffe
Text interface: should be faster download; includes all VR movies of both High Shincliffe and Shincliffe Village
A note on the technology and download times
The VR movies are constructed with QTVR, and are a composite of over 500 high resolution digital images captured over two weeks in Spring 2000. Each movie is constructed from a master image, and produced in three different levels of resolution. The low resolution movies used here are each approximately 120k in size, and will take approximately 40-60 seconds to download with a 56k modem. This website give you the option to view higher resolution movies, which are approximately 400k in size. Highest resolution movies are not available on this site (but Shincliffe Residents see below): they are approximately 2.5MB in size
A note to Shinclfife Residents
If you think there is a site in or around Shincliffe that would be suitable for a VR movie and/or which would add to the website, please contact me. As a local resident I will ordinarily produce any VR for free as long as it is for non-commercial and/or community use (and providing I have enough free time to do it!)
This website contains only low and medium resolution VR movies. If you would like a copy of this website with high-resolution movies, I will be happy to provide it for the cost of consumables ( e.g. CD-R) as long as it is for personal or community (non-commercial) use.
